Free types
Free-type items can have a default cost code assigned so that the code is pre-filled each time you use that free type. This saves you from having to select the same cost code manually every time.
- 1
Go to Tools > Setup > Cost Code Free Types.
- 2
Find the free type you want to configure and select a cost code from the drop-down.
Even with a default set, you can still change the cost code on the product selection screen when adding a free-type item to your estimate. The default simply pre-fills the field — it does not lock you in.
Setting defaults is particularly worthwhile when the free type always corresponds to the same cost code category. For example, if you have a free type for valves and a cost code called "Valves", setting the default means the correct code will already be selected whenever you use that free type.
Subcon and specials
Default cost codes for subcontract categories can be set alongside the category descriptions and default markup percentages.
- 1
Go to Tools > Setup > Subcon Special Category and Overheads.
- 2
In the grid, find the Cost Code column and assign a code to each subcontract category.
When you add a subcon or special item to your estimate, the cost code will be pre-filled based on the default you have set here. Unlike standard material items, the code appears once you enter the item details — you do not need to press Confirm first to see it.
It is good practice to always set default cost codes on your subcontract categories. This ensures that subcontract items are consistently coded without requiring manual input each time.
Import and export
This screen also supports import and export, so you can manage your subcontract categories and their cost codes in a spreadsheet if you prefer. When you import the data back in, it will also create the subcontract category headings — so this can be a useful way to set up your subcon categories and cost code defaults in one step.
Labour cost codes for subcon
If you have enabled the labour cost code option, you can also set default labour cost codes for your subcontract categories from the same screen.
