Manual save
Click the Save button in the toolbar to save your project at any time. You should press this regularly throughout your session, and always before leaving a project.
Make it a habit to save after completing each major task — for example, after finishing a floor's lighting count or after tracing a containment run. Frequent saving protects you against unexpected interruptions.
Quit prompt
When you attempt to close a project or shut down Ensign X, the software will prompt you to save before quitting. This acts as a safety net if you forget to save manually. You can choose to save and exit, or exit without saving.
However, do not rely solely on the quit prompt. If the software closes unexpectedly (for example, due to a power cut or system error), the quit prompt cannot help you. Regular manual saving and auto-save provide much stronger protection.
The estimating module does not have a separate save button — it saves automatically when you exit a job. The PDF takeoff software is different: you must actively save your work by pressing the Save button or relying on auto-save. Always remember to save before closing the PDF takeoff.
Auto-save
You can enable automatic saving so your work is saved at regular intervals without you having to remember. This is one of the first things worth setting up when you install Ensign X.
- 1
Open System Preferences by clicking the cogwheel icon at the top of the screen.
- 2
Locate the Auto-save setting and enable it.
- 3
Configure your preferred save interval (e.g. every 5 or 10 minutes).
- 4
Press OK to confirm.
Once enabled, the software saves your project automatically at the interval you have set. You do not need to do anything — the save happens in the background while you continue working.
Even with auto-save enabled, any work done since the last automatic save will be lost if you close without saving. Auto-save reduces the window of potential data loss but does not eliminate it entirely. Always save before leaving a project.
Auto-save is a system-level setting, so it applies to all projects once enabled. You only need to configure it once.
